In 2016, the G7 Ministers agreed to take an ambitious approach to tackling ocean issues, and developed the Future of the Seas and Ocean Initiative with five main Action Areas. These Action Areas were revised in 2024 at the G7 Scientific and Technology Ministerial, and include:
Ocean Observation
Support the development and coordination of enhanced sustained global sea and ocean observation, with surface-to-full-depth and pole-to-pole coverage, required to monitor, understand, and manage inter alia climate change, marine biodiversity, and pollution, in particular through marine research infrastructures.
Promote the improvement of global networking to support the development of digital infrastructure and interoperability of data and prediction systems, including digital twins of the Ocean, as well as support the development of an Ocean assessment system, with appropriate indicators, to ensure the translation of data into knowledge and action, respectively.
Analyses and Predictions
Support international collaboration for the development and improvement of global and regional Ocean analyses and prediction systems, foster open science, and improve accessibility and uptake of outputs for decision-making while raising political awareness of the needs for ocean information.
Strengthen collaborative approaches to encourage the development of regional observing capabilities and knowledge networks in a coordinated and coherent way, including support of capacity building in developing countries.
Promote increased G7 political cooperation by identifying additional actions needed to enhance global networks of Ocean observation, data infrastructure, and prediction.
